Preparing Your Children for a Family Photo Shoot in Belfast: Tips from a Pro
Booking a family photoshoot is such a special opportunity to capture your family, just as you are. The laughter, the cuddles, the chaos, and all the love and craziness between you! But if you’re feeling a little nervous about how your children will behave on the day, you’re not alone!
As a family photographer in Belfast, I completely understand that parents want their session to go smoothly as possible, and create some beautiful images.
I’ve worked with hundreds of families in and around Belfast, and I have some good news for you. With a little preparation (and the right mindset), your shoot can be a fun, stress-free experience that everyone actually enjoys, and creates portraits you will love to display in your home.
Here are my top tips to help you and your children feel comfortable, confident, and ready for a brilliant family photo session.
Set the Right Expectations — for Everyone
Before your shoot, have a little chat with your children about what’s going to happen. Explain that you’re going to play, laugh, and cuddle while someone takes pictures. Keep it light and positive. Please don’t say you’ll be angry or disappointed if they don’t smile! Natural expressions are always better than a forced grin!
For younger children, avoid making a big deal about “behaving” or “smiling nicely.” Instead, tell them you’ll be spending time together as a family. Kids respond much better when they know there’s no pressure.
2. Choose the Right Time of Day
Every child has their happy times and their tired times. Try to schedule your session for when your children are usually at their best. After a nap and snack is the best time, so bellies are full and they aren’t too tired.
3. Dress for Comfort and Coordination
When it comes to outfits, comfort is key! Choose clothes that your children can move, sit, and play in easily. Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or fussy, and don’t try to break in a brand new pair of shoes on the day of your photo shoot. No-one is ever happy with sore toes!
Coordinating your outfits (without matching exactly) helps your photos look polished and timeless. I love it when a family has a colour palette running through their outfits. Jeans and white tops or white dresses, sand chinos and or linen trousers. Or choose a colour you love – blues, pinks, creams – whatever you are happy and confident wearing!
4. Bring Snacks, Wipes, and Backup Clothes
Even the best-behaved little ones can get hungry, tired, or bored mid-shoot, and that’s ok! Bring along a few favourite snacks for an energy boost, wipes for quick clean-ups, and maybe a change of clothes… just in case!
Having these things handy helps keep everyone relaxed, and means you don’t have to worry if something unexpected happens. And honestly, the unexpected moments are often when we capture the best photos!
6. Make It a Fun Experience
Bring along your little one’s favourite toy, a bubble wand, or a teddy bear to help them to settle in and enjoy the session. When your children are having fun, they’ll forget the camera is even there and give me their very best smiles!
7. End on a Positive Note
After your session, celebrate with something your family enjoys, an ice cream, a hot chocolate, or a visit to the park. A little bribery never hurt! When children associate photoshoots with something fun, it makes future sessions even easier!
Family photography is about capturing the real, beautiful connections between you and your loved ones, not perfect poses. With a little preparation, your Belfast family photoshoot will be full of laughter, love, and moments you’ll treasure forever.
